Chapter 8

COUGHING vehemently, Val awoke.

Spewing out the remnants of cold water from his aching, burning lungs, he pried his eyes open, scanning his surroundings in a daze. Drenched to the bone and with his clothes stuck to his skin uncomfortably tight, Val managed to raise his head enough to see where he was.

The chamber was dank and dark, but a faint glow from luminescent mold on the stone walls gave enough light for him to see Pip lying nearby, motionless, and fear gripped him with sharp nails. Please, oh, Father Odin, let him be only unconscious, not dead.

After scrambling to his feet but then falling down on his wobbly knees, Val crawled toward Pip, who suddenly jerked and coughed out water. “Oh, thank the gods…,” Val whispered in a wave of relief as he drew the younger man into his lap and gathered him close, surrounding his lankier figure with his own more athletic and wiry body. Gently rocking his lover in his arms, he pressed his damp cheek against the moist head of sandy-blond hair that belonged to the man he wanted more than anything.

“Val—” Pip’s voice shattered as the coughs wracked his body.

“It’s all right, Pip,” he murmured in Pip’s ear, sighing, deeply relieved at having Pip back.

Then a new fear took hold of him, and his gaze darted around searching for their colossal genie. When he didn’t find him anywhere, his heart stopped beating and his mood sank lower than the underground city they were lost in. “Jinn…?”

“Jinn…?” Pip’s shrill, alarmed voice rose to accompany his, and Pip fought with his remaining strength to get up and look for their companion. “Jinn, where are you?”

“We’ll find him, Pip,” Val reassured him, getting up too, though his feet shook under him, as if unsure whether they could hold his weight. Having been an immortal and a lesser god for what felt like an eternity already, being this helpless and weak was not a comfortable feeling in the slightest. “I promise we will find him. We won’t leave him here.”

“That’s mighty nice and considerate of you, Val. I’m truly honored.”

Jinn entered the circle of low glimmering light, brushing his wet jeans with his hands but to no real avail. His long black hair cascaded down in heavy wet strands, and he’d removed his white T-shirt. His powerful chest with its gigantic muscles shimmered, wet and delicious. If their situation had not been so desperate, Val would’ve jumped the man.

As it was, Pip beat him to it, crying out with glee and pouncing on the genie like an attacking lion cub, with single-minded ferocity and enthusiasm.

“Don’t ever scare me like that again!” Pip mumbled against Jinn’s massive chest until Jinn took pity on him, grabbed his butt, and hoisted him up so that their faces were level. Pip proceeded to rain kisses all over Jinn, who chuckled in response, holding the young man close and murmuring soothing words and sounds to him.

Pip was not alone in his overwhelming relief—despite the continuous hazardous situation, they were all together again.
